Some fan moments age into legend, and Karisma Kapoor’s first brush with Govinda is exactly that kind of story. The actress recently revisited the memory, recalling how, long before Hero No. 1 or Coolie No. 1 made them one of the 90s’ most beloved screen pairs, she was simply a young admirer standing backstage with a red rose in hand, watching Govinda perform alongside Neelam Kothari on the track “Street Dancer.”
Karisma made no secret of just how deep her admiration ran even before she entered the industry herself. “I was a huge fan of Chi Chi ji (Govinda) since the very beginning, just like everyone else. I was so crazy for his dance that I remember when Khudgarz (1987) had released, I was in love with the song ‘Aap ke aa jane se’,” she recalled, describing how she would stand quietly in the wings, peeping through the curtains just to catch him perform live.
That early fan moment eventually turned into one of Bollywood’s most prolific on-screen partnerships. Karisma and Govinda went on to work together in 11 films, including Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, Saajan Chale Sasural and Dulhe Raja, cementing themselves as one of the most commercially successful jodis of the decade. Their last film together was the 2000 crime thriller Shikari, where Karisma took on a rare action-heavy role opposite Govinda’s villainous turn.

Interestingly, their first on-screen meeting was no less memorable than that fan moment. Karisma has spoken before about how their chemistry clicked almost instantly on set, something she credits to the comfort of having admired his work for years before ever sharing a frame with him. That early familiarity, she’s said, made it far easier to find an easy rhythm together, whether it was a high-energy dance number or a comic scene packed with Govinda’s trademark timing.
The anecdote resurfaced when the two reunited to celebrate 25 years of Hero No. 1, a film that remains one of their most fondly remembered collaborations even today. For an entire generation that grew up on their chemistry, this little throwback is proof that even superstars started out as starry-eyed fans once.
