Michael Douglas has been making headlines after opening up about his personal life. For those unaware, in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old actor admitted that he had an affair with his Romancing the Stone co-star, Kathleen Turner. At the time, he was still legally married to his ex-wife, Diandra Douglas. Michael claimed that he and Kathleen kept the nature of their relationship a secret for four decades, despite fans’ speculations that they were more than co-workers.
In addition to his affair, Michael is now getting candid about his “rollercoaster” life, including doing drugs and surviving cancer.
Michael Douglas reveals unknown details about his life
Michael Douglas is bearing it all in his memoir, One Helluva Ride. According to the actor, his life has been “a rollercoaster starting from childhood.” He grew up shuttling between Hollywood and the East Coast after his parents, Kirk Douglas and actress Diana Dill, split.
When he was in Los Angeles with his father, Michael would visit movie sets and also attend parties hosted by his dad with friends like Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, and Burt Lancaster. Once in New York, Michael revealed that he was nearly kidnapped after he was probably targeted because of his famous parents. Thankfully, he was able to escape in the nick of time in an elevator.

Many might find it hard to believe, but seeing how busy his father was and how constantly he was away, Michael Douglas swore he would never become an actor. He said, “I resented it.” However, contrary to his words, he eventually followed in his parents’ footsteps and entered the entertainment industry. Michael got his breakthrough in his late 20s when he landed a lead role on the ABC drama The Street of San Francisco.
Michael Douglas then went on to produce the acclaimed hit One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. He became a top producer in Hollywood and a highly sought-after leading man.
But life behind the scenes was not always so glamorous. In the memoir, the actor got candid about his drug use. He claimed that once he even fell asleep with a straw still in his nose after doing cocaine. According to Michael, he began doing drugs because he was overwhelmed and under a lot of pressure. He blamed it for the failure of his first marriage with Diandra Douglas and said:
“The drug culture — pot and everything — was just part of the culture. But then it did get darker…I was overwhelmed, [under] a lot of pressure and began to get more involved with cocaine. I think it was a large part of the failure of my first marriage and going for rehab. But then I thought, it’s important to talk about it.”
Michael Douglas opened up about surviving stage 4 tongue cancer
It was in 2010 when Michael Douglas received a stage 4 tongue cancer diagnosis. Seeing how his children and now-wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, rallied behind him at the time, it reminded him of how close family is. In his words:
“During my bout of chemo and radiation, being knocked out and seeing the support that I got from my children — who didn’t quite understand everything but enough to know that Dad’s sick — really reminded me of this idea of how close family is and how supportive [and] wonderful Catherine was.”

Surviving cancer changed Michael Douglas as a person. It helped him slow down and cherish those closest to him. He said:
“It played an important part in terms of slowing down a little bit and cherishing those that are closest to you. After that, my priorities changed.”
