Martin O’Neill clears up Celtic future after ‘time of reflection’

Martin O’Neill has insisted he remains the right man to lead Celtic and is “raring to go” after using the international break to reflect on his future.

The 74-year-old appeared to cast doubt over his managerial career following a difficult run of results last month, admitting “it might be time to wrap it up” after Celtic suffered two defeats against Rangers.

Those losses came either side of a 3-1 home defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League, placing O’Neill under pressure despite his success since returning to Parkhead.

However, Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson publicly backed the experienced manager and O’Neill has now made clear that he intends to continue.

“I am extremely prepared now for it,” O’Neill said in an interview with the club.

“We had a difficult week. That can happen. You can lose to your arch-rivals, you can lose the European game.

“It’s certainly not the end of the world as it seemed to be described as. I thought I would take a bit of time, and it didn’t take me that much time to think about it.”

Celtic boss targets another league title

O’Neill returned to Celtic last season and ultimately had two spells in interim charge before signing a one-year contract to remain as manager.

His return proved successful as Celtic completed a league and Scottish Cup double, but their recent run prompted questions over whether he would see out his latest spell in Glasgow.

The Northern Irishman has now dismissed those doubts and set his sights on delivering further silverware.

“I want to lead the club, I want to try to win the league and I’m just as determined now than ever before,” O’Neill said.

“It was a time of reflection for a moment or two, but overall, I’m back, I’m raring to go and the team’s ready.”
