Strictly Come Dancing’s new It Take Two host Ellie Taylor is married to a famous journalist, who took a step back from his career to become a stay-at-home dad
Amid Ellie Taylor‘s new TV presenting career, she’s being supported at home by another famous face. The star, who competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2022, returned to the glitz and glamour this year as the new host of It Takes Two.
The new host is married to Phil Black, who is one of CNN’s top journalists and has covered some of the biggest stories of our time, from the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 to the search for Madeline McCann and the Princess Diana inquest. He started out as a researcher on Australia’s Channel Nine Gateway programme, working his way up to a producer and a reporter before becoming a correspondent for Seven News.
He joined CNN International in 2007 and previously served as the Russia correspondent before being redeployed to London. The Macleay College graduate reported live from the crash site of the downed MH17 plane and has been at the front of the action during the Russian conflict with Ukraine.

He met Ellie in a lift in Central London. The moment soon became part of the comedian’s stand-up routine, as she joked that she was planning to remain single, until meeting a “hot guy” at work. During her 2016 Live At The Apollo performance, she said: “Hot guy gets in the lift and presses level one. We’re only on the ground floor, he’s only going up one level, lazy… Hot guy puts out his hand to introduce himself and says, ‘Hi, I’m Phil’, and six years later I married him.”
In 2014, the pair got married. Four years later, they welcomed their first child together, a daughter. Their son was born in 2023. Ellie has since revealed that her journalist husband has traded in the newsroom for the nursery, becoming a stay-at-home dad.
She said to Ateh Jewel on the Second Act podcast: “Do you know, my husband’s a stay-at-home dad?” She said she found no longer being the primary caregiver for their children challenging and constantly found herself “micromanaging” Phil, adding that she was unsure how to navigate their situation because she had not examples to follow.
“I don’t know anyone in my life who has the same setup as us; we don’t have anyone who’s a stay-at-home dad,” she said. “So we are kind of making up as we go along,” she continued, adding, “And it’s really interesting when the power dynamic or the classic power dynamic of the ‘mum at home, dad at work’ shifts. It’s quite weird because you’re kind of in free fall.”
The comedian has also shared that she and Phil enjoy a laughter-filled marriage, with Ellie admitting her funniest trick is to stick her finger in his mouth while he’s yawning.
During her first time on Strictly, Ellie quashed talk of the so-called Strictly Curse, which is often blamed for the collapse of stars’ relationships after they appear on the show. Four years prior, she had made a raunchy viral video about the curse for BBC Two’s satirical show, The Mash Report.
Acting as newsreader Susan Traherne, she told viewers: “The favourite dancing show continues to be dogged by infidelity, experts studying the so called Strictly curse have been unable to fathom how two people spending days rubbing their genitals together to romantic music could possibly end up shagging.”
Speaking to Ranvir Singh, who was hit with romance rumours when she was partnered with Giovanni Pernice two years earlier, she insisted the curse isn’t a real thing.
Asked if she’d ‘had this chat’ with her husband, Ellie replied: “It’s a wild thing to think isn’t it but The Mash Report is a satirical show, you know it’s written by writers and I play a character.”
But having experienced it first-hand, Ranvir insisted: “I mean I’ve been on Strictly and it was pretty close to the truth, I’m not going to lie. “You talk about how close you have to be, it really is like that though.”
