Director Mari Selvaraj has heaped praise on Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy, describing the film as a deeply satisfying cinematic experience and applauding its focus on lives and emotions that deserve greater representation on screen.

Taking to X on Wednesday, Mari revealed that he had watched the film only recently, admitting that his viewing came “very late”. Despite that, the filmmaker said Dorothy left a lasting impression on him. “Today I watched Dorothy. It was very late, but it was a film that gave me immense satisfaction,” he wrote.

Mari went on to explain what resonated with him about the film. According to the filmmaker, Dorothy succeeds in bringing to the forefront the kind of people and experiences that filmmakers often hope to see represented more openly in mainstream cinema. He particularly appreciated the manner in which the film engages with the emotional lives of its characters, including their stories, pain, desires, betrayals, dreams and hopes.

The filmmaker also praised the film for documenting these lives without softening or filtering their experiences. His appreciation points towards one of Dorothy’s central strengths, its willingness to examine people who exist outside conventional ideas of masculinity, identity and social acceptance, while allowing their emotions to remain at the heart of the narrative.

Mari also credited Karthik Subbaraj for bringing such a story to the screen and singled out Ilaiyaraaja’s music for its contribution to the film. He concluded his note by extending his wishes and affection to Subbaraj, Ilaiyaraaja and the entire team behind Dorothy.

Dorothy Finds Support From Across The Film Fraternity

The appreciation comes as Dorothy continues to attract attention from prominent voices within the Tamil film industry. Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film marks his 10th directorial and centres on the friendship between Karthi and Subbu, played by Rishikanth and Sananth respectively. Their lives are transformed by the arrival of Dorothy, portrayed by Keerthy Suresh.

Set against the rural landscape of Madurai, Dorothy explores friendship, masculinity, gender identity, violence and acceptance, while examining the social expectations that dictate how individuals are expected to behave and live. The film also marks Karthik Subbaraj’s first collaboration with veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja, whose music has emerged as one of its most discussed elements.

Dorothy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, becoming the first Tamil feature to premiere at TIFF in a decade. The film’s festival screening was met with a standing ovation, adding to the attention surrounding the project even before its wider release.

Mari is not the only filmmaker or actor to have responded warmly to the film. Suriya had earlier praised Dorothy for addressing a subject that is rarely explored openly in mainstream cinema. He also highlighted the performances of Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth, along with Ilaiyaraaja’s music. Mammootty, Mani Ratnam and Dhanush are among the other prominent names from the film fraternity who have expressed their appreciation for the film.

With Mari Selvaraj now joining that list, Dorothy continues to find support for its attempt to place unconventional lives and complex emotional experiences at the centre of a mainstream Tamil film.
