Jerry Jones is giving Tony Romo some grace.
On his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan and RJ,” the Cowboys owner sung his former quarterback’s praises and was optimistic about his future after he parted ways with CBS last week.
“Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis,” Jones said. “I love him, and I’m sorry that this has evolved this way this year because I enjoyed him so much in what he could bring to the NFL and, frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy. Now, having said all of that, he’s just getting started. He really is. I say that with all sincerity. He’s just getting started.
“And he certainly has made some mistakes. I can’t look in my mirror without seeing what can happen when you experience mistakes. But he realizes that there’s an area of his life that he wants to do better in. That’s been said ad nauseum, publicly. He’s got great opportunity ahead of him. I don’t know of anyone, period, that has a better future than Tony Romo. And I’m excited for him. He’s not only got great talent, but he’s a hell of a man.”
Romo was first placed on indefinite leave following the news of his OWI arrest in July, and last week CBS and its lead analyst officially parted ways.

J.J. Watt took over Romo’s spot in the top CBS booth alongside Jim Nantz for play-by-play and Tracy Wolfson reporting from the sidelines.
Romo is now free to look for other opportunities while still retaining much of his remaining $72 million owed by CBS, though he said he will take some time off during the fallout of his arrest.
Romo first joined CBS in 2017, later signing a massive 10-year, $180 million deal with the network in 2020.
