Indian cinema has lost one of its most powerful performers. Veteran actor Nana Patekar passed away on Thursday, October 8, at the age of 75, after suffering a severe cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. According to a report, he was declared dead at 5:20 am, despite nearly 45 minutes of continuous CPR in an attempt to revive him. A medico-legal case has been registered, and a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira, he built a career spanning nearly five decades, moving fluidly between Hindi and Marathi cinema and earning a reputation as one of the finest actors the industry has produced. His filmography reads like a masterclass in range, from the raw intensity of Parinda and Krantiveer, which won him the National Film Award for Best Actor, to the gangster-with-a-heart energy he brought to Welcome and its sequel, and the political sharpness of Raajneeti.
Beyond the big screen, Patekar’s contribution to Indian cinema was formally recognised with a Padma Shri in 2013. He also held an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, and founded the Naam Foundation, an organisation dedicated to supporting drought-affected farmers in Maharashtra, reflecting a side of him that extended well beyond his film work.

He was last seen in public just four days before his passing, making an appearance at an event in Goa, with no visible signs at the time of the health crisis that would follow. He was also most recently seen on screen in the show Sankalp.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from across the industry, remembering him not just as an actor of rare intensity, but as someone who brought depth and unpredictability to every role he took on, whether villain, cop, or everyman caught in extraordinary circumstances.
Details regarding his last rites and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
