KOBE –
Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force unveiled its latest submarine, the Shogei, at a launch ceremony in Kobe on October 8, featuring improved detection capabilities and quieter onboard systems following construction at a cost of approximately 80.5 billion yen.
The ceremony took place on the morning of October 8 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Kobe Shipyard, where approximately 300 officials and invited guests gathered to witness the launch of the advanced submarine.
The vessel’s name, Shogei, combines Japanese characters meaning “soaring” and “giant whale,” reflecting a tradition of naming Japanese submarines after marine creatures.
Measuring 84 meters in length, the Shogei can accommodate a crew of approximately 70 personnel. Its construction cost totaled around 80.5 billion yen, making it a major investment in Japan’s submarine capabilities.
The submarine incorporates improvements designed to reduce noise from crew activities and onboard machinery compared with previous vessels. The quieter operating environment is expected to enhance its detection capabilities, allowing it to identify underwater activity more effectively.
Reducing internal and mechanical noise is particularly important for submarines, as it improves the performance of acoustic sensors while also making the vessel more difficult for other submarines and surface ships to detect.
The Shogei is scheduled to undergo further outfitting and testing before being delivered to the Maritime Self-Defense Force in March 2028.
