The Indian franchise is set to continue with Indian 3, with Kamal Haasan returning to headline the third instalment. The film will once again be written and directed by Shankar, with the makers confirming that post-production work has commenced.

The franchise began with Indian in 1996, introducing Kamal Haasan as Senapathy, a former freedom fighter and martial arts expert who turns vigilante in his mission to eliminate corruption. His crusade eventually puts him at odds with his own son Chandru, also played by Kamal Haasan, whose corrupt practices become central to the conflict.

Nearly three decades later, Indian 2 brought Senapathy back to the present day. Released in 2024, the sequel revisited the character’s fight against corruption while expanding the mythology surrounding him. The film also laid the groundwork for another chapter, with its ending offering a glimpse into the story that Indian 3 would explore.

Indian 3 To Explore Senapathy’s Family History

While Indian and Indian 2 largely focused on Senapathy himself, the third film is set to take the franchise further into his past. Indian 3 will centre on Veerasekaran Balram, Senapathy’s father, who was also a freedom fighter.

Kamal Haasan is expected to portray the character, adding another layer to the actor’s already extensive association with the franchise. The storyline was teased towards the end of Indian 2, suggesting that the upcoming film will move further back in time and explore the roots of Senapathy’s ideology and his relationship with the fight against injustice.

The decision to expand the story into Senapathy’s family history also gives Shankar an opportunity to broaden the period and political backdrop of the franchise. Indian 3 could therefore function not merely as a continuation of the 2024 film, but as an exploration of the events and experiences that shaped one of Tamil cinema’s most recognisable vigilante characters.

The film will also bring back several members of the Indian 2 cast. Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah are confirmed to reprise their respective roles.

Shankar And Kamal Haasan Continue The Indian Legacy

The technical team for Indian 3 includes several key collaborators from the franchise. Anirudh Ravichander returns as composer, while Ravi Varman is the cinematographer. Muthuraj Thangavel is on board as production designer.

Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran are producing the film under the Lyca Productions banner. With post-production now underway, Indian 3 marks the continuation of a franchise that has remained closely associated with Shankar’s larger-than-life filmmaking and Kamal Haasan’s ability to transform into characters across different eras.

For Kamal Haasan, the film also represents another return to a character that has spanned generations of Tamil cinema audiences. Indian introduced Senapathy in 1996, Indian 2 brought him back in 2024, and Indian 3 now looks set to delve even deeper into the character’s origins.

Beyond Indian 3, Kamal Haasan is also set to collaborate with Chiththa-fame director SU Arunkumar for another upcoming project. With multiple films in different stages, the veteran actor continues to balance franchise commitments with collaborations with a newer generation of filmmakers.
