Being embarrassed by your parents is practically a rite of passage. But when your dad is Ray Winstone, even a harmless social media post can become a source of serious cringe.
With actress Jaime Winstone taking part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, her famous father, Ray, has now revealed he has to “be careful” when posting on social media.
The 69-year-old star of Netflix’s The Gentlemen, famed for a five decade career embracing tough guy roles, has more than 350,000 followers on Instagram, but admits: “When I was drinking I used to talk about Egyptian burial grounds and the pyramids. I had to stop that.”
And when 41-year-old Jaime told him she was taking part in Strictly, the East End born actor, who got his big break as a borstal inmate in the 1979 movie Scum, initially tried to discourage her.
Ray says: “I was like, ‘what are you doing that for? You don’t want to be a celebrity. You want to be an actress don’t you?’
“She said ‘Dad it is different today. That is the way in.’ And it is now about how many things you have got on your Instagram. It’s a different world.”
In the past Jaimie, who has two sisters, has revealed her famous dad has created a replica Stonehenge in miniature at the bottom of his garden in Essex, calling the stones the ‘Winstones’.
For his part Ray, who has been married to wife Elaine for 47 years and who gave up drinking so he could spend more meaningful time with his family, says he is “very proud” of his daughter and her Strictly journey.
The star of films such as Quadrophenia, Sexy Beast and superhero blockbuster Black Widow, says: “I have always thought my children should have their own opinions rather than listening to mine. It makes me very proud when my kids say something I don’t agree with.
“I learn more from my kids than perhaps what my kids learnt from me. Jaime is so brave in what she is doing. It is hard work. That’s graft.”
