EastEnders newcomer Jamie Bamber is the older brother of a famous movie and television actress.
Jamie, 53, recently arrived in Walford as charming therapist Ned Hawkins, the brother-in-law of Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington). The ex-soldier has only been on the BBC soap for a short time, but has already blackmailed Nicola for a share in her club, Harry’s Barn, as he confirmed he is holding onto a mysterious secret that spans 20 years.
Ned is also proving to be hard on his son, Ryder (Felix Uff), after he continuously makes backhanded comments about his abilities. Earlier this week, Ryder was left feeling deflated by his dad’s words, and on Thursday, October 8, Ned tore a strip off his son for slacking off from working at the nightclub and warned him to do better in the future.
In a heartbreaking twist, Ryder has been struggling with his sexuality but feels unsupported by his father, and wants to hide his true self from his parents.
Later in the episode, Ned answered the door to speak to Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) after he showed his support following his prison release. But he heard giggling coming from Square Gardens, and when he investigated, he witnessed his son kissing a man.
Next week, Ryder will be pressured by Ned into rejoining his local football team, though, upon hearing about a player who struggled with coming out, he will show reluctance. Ned will also launch a new blackmail plot.
