SS Rajamouli is reportedly developing a fictional language for his ambitious project Varanasi, marking yet another attempt to expand the world-building possibilities of Indian cinema. If true, this would be the filmmaker’s second major experiment with an invented tongue after Baahubali, which introduced audiences to the artificial language Kiliki. Linguist and lyricist Madhan Karky, who collaborated with Rajamouli on that project, is said to be working with him once again to create a distinct vocabulary, grammar and linguistic identity for the film.
According to reports, the language is being designed for an ancient, isolated tribe that plays a key role in the story. The move is in line with Rajamouli’s emphasis on authenticity and immersive storytelling. Varanasi, which reportedly blends history, mythology and adventure, is expected to explore themes rooted in the sacred city while also travelling across different eras and geographies.
Examples from world cinema
Invented languages have often added depth to fictional worlds in global cinema. James Cameron commissioned linguists to create the Na’vi language for Avatar (2009), while Star Trek popularised Klingon among fans worldwide. Other notable examples include Heptapod B from Arrival (2016), and Dothraki and High Valyrian from Game of Thrones.
Rajamouli’s decision, if confirmed, would place Varanasi within that tradition of expansive world-building, where language itself becomes an important storytelling tool.

Rajamouli’s appetite for experimentation
Over the years, Rajamouli has consistently pushed creative boundaries. From the unconventional revenge drama of Eega to the epic scale of the Baahubali films and the elaborate action sequences of RRR, he has repeatedly explored ideas rarely attempted in mainstream Indian cinema. His films have also embraced cutting-edge visual effects, ambitious production design and innovative narrative structures.
Varanasi is already generating attention for its scale. Reports suggest that it will be the first non-English feature film to shoot extensively in the full 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio. The film is also expected to feature international locations spanning Africa, Antarctica, Europe and ancient India. Co-starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film is reportedly being planned for a simultaneous release in over 120 countries, including a dedicated international version with English subtitles.
