He was born into a poor family in Bihar. Years later, his mathematical brilliance would take him from Patna to Berkeley, Washington University and NASA.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh was born in Basantpur village, Bhojpur, on 2 April 1942. His extraordinary talent in mathematics became clear from a young age. At Patna Science College, his brilliance caught the attention of American mathematician Professor John L. Kelley, who invited him to Berkeley.
He moved to California in 1963 and completed his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1969. He later taught mathematics at Washington University, worked with NASA, and returned to India to teach at IIT Kanpur and IIT Kolkata.
But behind the extraordinary mathematician was a deeply difficult personal journey. Singh was diagnosed with schizophrenia and lived with the illness for more than four decades. He returned to his village in 1987 and later disappeared while travelling, before being found near Chhapra four years later.
His life reminds us that brilliance and struggle can exist side by side.
Vashishtha Narayan Singh was one of Bihar’s remarkable sons, and his contribution to mathematics deserves to be remembered.
Has India forgotten one of its greatest mathematical minds?
