Chennai: Counting of votes polled in the October 6 byelections in two Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and a lone segment in the neighbouring Puducherry commenced at 8 am in designated counting centres amid tight security arrangements.Counting of postal ballots was taken up first and the votes polled in EVMs will be taken up subsequently, officials said.
The bypolls in Tamil Nadu and Union Territory Puducherry are crucial not only for the incumbent TVK and AINRC regimes, but for the Opposition parties as well, which face a litmus test.
The elections were held in Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram, both SC reserved seats, besides Thattanchavady in Puducherry.
The bypolls were necessitated due to the resignation of incumbent MLAs, including Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy in the respective segments.
