Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC), headed by its chairperson Dr. Justice Shameem Akther on Friday took suo-motu cognizance of a news report published in a vernacular newspaper, regarding the alleged food poisoning of about girl students at the Government Women’s Polytechnic College hostel in Pebbair, Wanaparthy district, after consuming chicken for dinner on October 7.

The report also alleged that the hostel warden and her husband attempted to conceal the actual circumstances of the incident by attributing the students’ illness to viral fever.

Considering the seriousness of the incident and concerns over food safety and the health of the students, the Commission has called for a detailed report from the District Collector, Wanaparthy, on the circumstances of the incident, the health condition of the affected students and the medical treatment provided to them.

The matter has been posted to November 6, 2026 for submission of the report.
