The ruling TVK in Tamil Nadu appeared poised to win both Assembly bypolls in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, while the BJP established commanding leads in West Bengal’s Nandigram and Rejinagar and Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. In neighbouring Puducherry, the ruling AINRC retained Thattanchavady by a margin of 8,482 votes.

Tamil Nadu: TVK Heads For Wins In Madurantakam, Dharapuram

Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, appeared set to win the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly bypolls as counting progressed on Friday. The party’s candidates maintained substantial leads over their rivals, despite the opposition’s allegations of horse-trading and betrayal.

In Dharapuram, TVK candidate P Sathyabama, who initially trailed AIADMK nominee K Banumathi, recovered to establish a clear lead. She was ahead by 10,003 votes towards the close of the 20th round, according to the latest figures in the report. DMK candidate S Suganya moved into second place, pushing the AIADMK nominee to third.

In Madurantakam, TVK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel maintained a steady lead from the beginning, crossing a margin of 13,000 votes by the 12th round. DMK nominee I Paranthamen was in second place, followed by AIADMK candidate S Kanitha Sampath.

The apparent victories would strengthen the TVK’s position in the Assembly and provide a morale boost ahead of bypolls expected in five more constituencies. The party has 107 MLAs, including the Speaker, in the 234-member Assembly, where 118 is the majority mark. It relies on support from the Congress and outside backing from the Left parties to sustain its minority government.

The results also highlight a changing electoral landscape, with Vijay’s TVK emerging as a major force alongside the DMK and AIADMK. Both Kumaravel and Sathyabama had earlier won their seats on AIADMK tickets before resigning as legislators and joining the TVK.

Puducherry: AINRC Retains Thattanchavady

The ruling All India NR Congress (AINRC) retained the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency, delivering a victory in its first electoral test since assuming office. Party candidate Ashok Anand defeated Congress nominee E Vinayagam by 8,482 votes.

Anand secured 13,358 votes against Vinayagam’s 4,876, while DMK candidate K Sethu alias Sethuselvam received 2,664 votes, according to the Election Commission. The bypoll was necessitated after Chief Minister N Rangasamy resigned from Thattanchavady after winning the Mangalam seat in the April elections.

West Bengal: BJP Takes Commanding Leads In Nandigram, Rejinagar

The BJP established commanding leads in both West Bengal Assembly bypolls, with Hasirani Rath ahead by 1,06,513 votes in Nandigram and Shankharavh Sarkar leading by 55,583 votes in Rejinagar, according to Election Commission figures.

In Nandigram, Rath, the mother of slain personal assistant Chandranath Rath of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, polled 1,44,453 votes after 13 rounds of counting. Congress nominee Milan Pradhan, backed by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, secured 37,940 votes, while Left Front candidate Santi Gopal Giri was a distant third with 5,322 votes.

Rath’s lead had already far exceeded Adhikari’s 9,665-vote victory margin in the constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections. Adhikari vacated Nandigram after also winning Bhabanipur, necessitating the bypoll.

In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Sarkar polled 88,919 votes after ten rounds, ahead of Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) nominee Golam Nabi Azad, who secured 33,336 votes. Azad is the son of AJUP founder Humayun Kabir, who had won the constituency by more than 58,000 votes in the previous Assembly election.

The BJP’s strong showing in Rejinagar is particularly notable because nearly 70 per cent of the constituency’s electorate is Muslim. Congress candidate Abdullahil Kafi was in third place with 3,785 votes, followed by Trinamool Congress nominee Rabiul Alam Chowdhury with 3,123.

The trends pointed to a setback for a fragmented opposition, with multiple parties contesting the seats. However, the counting figures alone do not establish how individual communities voted or explain the BJP’s lead.

Assam: BJP’s Devasish Sharma Leads By Over 1.46 Lakh Votes In Nagaon

BJP candidate Devasish Sharma established a commanding lead of 1,46,180 votes over his nearest rival, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, according to the Election Commission.

Sharma, a former IAS officer, secured 5,28,938 votes, while Ajmal polled 3,82,758. Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora was a distant third with 95,881 votes.

Sharma led in the four Assembly segments of Morigaon, Raha, Jagiroad and Nagaon-Batadrava, while Ajmal was ahead in the Muslim-majority segments of Dhing, Samaguri, Laharighat and Rupahihat.

The bypoll was necessitated after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and successfully contested the Dispur Assembly seat on a BJP ticket earlier this year. A voter turnout of 76.19 per cent was recorded on October 6. The result will not affect the balance of power in Parliament.
