It was 100 years ago today that Paul Gallico, who was the unchallenged leading voice of New York sports all across the loudest minutes of the Roaring Twenties, asked his readers a curious question that, exactly a century later, all but crackles with irony.
“Do you think,” Gallico wrote late in the afternoon of Oct. 10, 1926, “that the New York Yankees will ever win a championship again?”
Gallico had just witnessed Game 7 of the World Series at 3-year-old Yankee Stadium, and it had left him — and much of baseball New York — both frazzled and puzzled … not unlike the way much of baseball New York feels on Oct. 10, 2026, truth be told.
And for a whole host of eerily similar reasons.
