Visakhapatnam:Members of various public organisations staged a protest at Komarada mandal headquarters in Parvathipuram Manyam district on Saturday, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters burnt his effigy, alleging that his actions had undermined public confidence in the electoral system.
Leaders of the participating organisations accused the Election Commission of acting against democratic principles and constitutional values. They raised concerns over the reported deletion of names from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), claiming that it could deprive citizens of their voting rights.
Addressing the gathering, the leaders described the right to vote as a key democratic right and called for greater transparency in the electoral process. They also alleged political interference in institutions expected to function independently.
The protest was part of a wider statewide campaign by mass organisations. Participants urged the Central government and other constitutional authorities to address their concerns and safeguard democratic values.
Those who participated included CITU district vice-president Wakada Indira, Andhra Pradesh Vyvasaya Karmikula Sangham district treasurer Kolli Sambamurthy, and other leaders, including Reddy Shivani Naidu, Lakshmaiah, Gournaidu, Anuradha, Durga, Rajeshwari and Rajeshwari.
The leaders said they would intensify their agitation in coordination with other democratic and mass organisations if their demands were not addressed. They reiterated their commitment to pursuing their demands through peaceful protests and public campaigns.
