The Supreme Court commences hearing on a batch of pleas over the government crackdown on protesters protesting in Delhi on October 10. A bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana is hearing the pleas against detentions by the Delhi police and paramilitary forces of protesters and a contempt plea over allegedly wilfully disobeying orders.
The Court has agreed to hear all the lawyers who wish to make mention of their respective pleas on protest cases. “Two matters are before us. There are lawyers who wish to make an unlisted mention of pleas filed. What we purpose to do is to go from right to left (in the Bar) and give an opportunity to hear every party”, the Court said. When counsels thanked SC for holding a special hearing on these issues, Justice Bagchi said “No need to thank us. We are always at the service of the nation”.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal begins submissions on a plea against detention and the order of imposition of Section 163. They are picking up people from trains, etc. Then there is the issue of suspension of the Internet (which is covered—decided— in the Anuradha Bhasin case), Sibal says.
