Two teenagers have been charged over the fatal stabbing of a man in his 30s in Sydney’s west on Friday night, as detectives close in on a group of people who were allegedly present for the attack.
Emergency services were called to Cleeve Close, Mount Druitt, near the Westfield shopping centre and train station, shortly before 9pm on Friday and discovered a man with stab wounds to his torso. The man died at the scene.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested at Mount Druitt Police Station at 7.20pm on Sunday and was charged with murder and breach of bail. He also faces one charge of robbery, unrelated to Friday’s stabbing.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested in a Cabramatta home less than an hour later, and was charged with accessory to murder after the alleged offence. The boys spent Sunday night behind bars, ahead of their appearance in a children’s court on Monday.
The boys were allegedly among about 12 people at the scene at the time of the stabbing. The investigation is continuing, as detectives work to determine the circumstances leading to the attack, and probe any gangland links.
The man killed on Friday was believed to be known to police, according to Blacktown Police Area Command Superintendent Brendan Gorman.
“It’s a horrendous incident, concerning for police,” he said.
CCTV shows a man wearing a white hoodie being kicked and pushed by a group of men, then chased down the street and punched as he lay on the road.
“[The lead-up to the stabbing] is all part of the investigation,” Gorman said.
Police are combing through CCTV and mobile phone vision. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information, CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
