Sunday saw a host of young and journeyman pros alike experience the highlight of their careers: earning PGA Tour cards at the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour Championship.
As happens every year, heartwarming tales about players’ big achievements abound. But there is another side to the story: the other pros who just missed out on their Tour cards.
On Sunday, the pain that group felt was best exemplified by Cole Hammer.
The 27-year-old Texas pro narrowly lost his grasp on his own Tour card with a poor final round on Sunday. But instead of fleeing the course as fast as he could, a “dejected” Hammer faced the cameras and opened up about his unfortunate fate. In the process, he showed a hard-earned perspective that should serve him well as he continues his pro career.
Cole Hammer after missing PGA Tour card: ‘It was a battle all day, I didn’t have it’
At the end of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, the top 20 players in the season-long standings earn their PGA Tour cards for the next season.
Heading into last week’s event, Hammer was the lucky bubble boy, sitting in the all-important 20th position in the standings. It had been a long time coming for the former star amateur.
Hammer played his college golf at the University of Texas, where he helped his team to an NCAA title in 2022. A former U.S. Amateur Four-Ball champion, Hammer was named the best amateur in the world back in 2019.
Hammer has played sporadically on the PGA Tour, before and after turning pro in 2022. In the 2022-23 season, he made 10 PGA Tour starts, earning his only career top-10 finish, a T5 at the 2022 RSM Classic.
But without a PGA Tour card, Hammer has spent most of his pro career on the Korn Ferry Tour. In three previous full Korn Ferry Tour seasons, Hammer’s best finish in the season-long standings was 65th.
The 2026 season has been a different story. Three early T4s followed by a T2 at the Utah Championship, where he lost in a five-way playoff, moved Hammer to 20th in the KFT standings.
He briefly fell out of Tour card contention. Then in September Hammer finished T6 and T7 in back-to-back KFT events to jump to 18th in the standings, before a T53 at last week’s Compliance Solutions Championship dropped him back to 20th.
With a PGA Tour card on the line at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, he opened last week’s event with a disappointing 72, but then charged back up the leaderboard with a 67 on Friday and a 69 on Saturday. With one more solid round, Hammer could at last earn his PGA Tour card for the first time.
But in the final round of the final event of the season, Hammer’s luck would run out. Five Sunday bogeys, including one on his second-to-last hole, dashed Hammer’s hopes.
By day’s end, he signed for a two-over 73 to finish the tournament T43. In the process, Hammer fell from 20th to 22nd in the final standings, surrendering his claim to a PGA Tour card for next year.
Immediately after his round, Hammer did a one-on-one interview posted on the Korn Ferry Tour’s social channels. He admitted he was “bummed” at the result and said his ball striking had ultimately betrayed him.
“It was a battle all day, I didn’t have it. I really didn’t have anything out there at all except my putter. And that can only bail you out so much,” Hammer said after his round. “And it just… bad ball striking caught up to me, and, yeah, I’m a little bummed out right now.”
He then explained that he was feeling good until his momentum was zapped by back-to-back bogeys on his eighth and ninth holes of the day.
“I got off to a decent start and got to my 8th hole which is No. 17 and made a bad bogey, and then had a 9-iron from the middle of the fairway on 18 and bogeyed there as well. And it just lost all my momentum,” Hammer explained.
He continued: “I was maybe a couple good holes away from kind of breaking it open and giving myself a little cushion on the back nine. And it just didn’t happen. I didn’t hit the shots I needed to. And so, I mean, what can I do?”
With Hammer dropping to 22nd, David Lamb, who had begun the week in 23rd, finished in 20th to earn the final PGA Tour card up for grabs.
Hammer positive despite Tour card disappointment: ‘I just believe in myself. It’s been a fun journey’
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom. While Hammer was honest about his major disappointment, he also acknowledged a lot of positives he took from the day.
Despite now having to play another season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Hammer affirmed that he still “believed” in himself and called his years-long quest for a PGA Tour card a “fun journey.”
“Having a chance at a PGA Tour card today was a pretty cool experience, and, yeah, I’m dejected right now, and I’m sure I will be for a while, but I just believe in myself,” Hammer said on Sunday. “It’s been a fun journey. It’s been five or six years of learning.”
While he admitted that he thought he was going to pull through and earn his Tour card on Sunday, he’s not getting down on himself. Instead, he’s excited about the future.
“I did think today was going to be my day. I felt like I had done the right things. It just didn’t pan out that way,” Hammer explained. “And I know God’s got a plan for me, so I’m just looking forward to see what that holds in the future.”
The pro golf world is cutthroat, on the PGA Tour most of all. Hammer proved on Sunday how narrow the line between success and failure is. But by maintaining a positive outlook in one of his worst career moments, he displayed a resilient midnset and short-term memory that should help him greatly as he attempts another run at his PGA Tour dream next season.
