RJ Mitte Appeared With 'Breaking Bad' Co-Star Luis Moncada 8 Days Before His Death, 'You Okay?'

RJ Mitte, the actor, philanthropist, and disability advocate best known for playing ‘Walter White Jr.’ in Breaking Bad, died by apparent suicide, as TMZ reported. Just over a week before his passing, his co-star and friend Luis Moncada had filmed him in a hot-air balloon.

The post has drawn renewed attention following his death, with some social media users interpreting that he appeared “exhausted” and “sad.” The brief exchange between the actors has also caught viewers’ interest as Mitte’s death probe continues.

Luis Moncada checked on RJ Mitte during balloon ride

In the days before his death, Mitte had been sharing updates about his professional projects and a visit to New Mexico’s 54th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. In what has now been one of his most recent appearances before death, Mitte joined his Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul co-star for the event, which ran from October 3 to October 11, 2026.

On October 4, 2026, Mitte appeared in a collaborative social media post with Moncada, who portrayed ‘Marco Salamanca’ in the franchise. The post also included New Mexico’s Pro Soccer team and United StrangeKind Ballooning. The caption read, “Breaking Bad: Lift Off Edition,” adding that the actors had enjoyed their experience at the festival and celebrated New Mexican culture.

At one point during the video, taken by Moncada while in a balloon, he asks Mitte, who was looking down, “You okay, RJ? You wanna hold your hand? Let’s hold hands, bro. Put your hand on my shoulder. You’re gonna be okay.”

Following news of Mitte’s death on October 12, 2026, the footage and photographs from the event attracted fresh attention online. Some viewers described him as tired or downcast, while others praised the actors’ sweet real-life bond despite being polar opposites in the series.

A user wrote on X, “No way the Salamanca twin was cool with Walt Jr. and checked in on him. Man, so sad… wholesome but now just sad.” Another commented that he was “visibly exhausted and sad” in the video when his friend checked to see if he was “mentally okay.” A third user countered, “Is everyone here seriously this stupid? He’s asking him if he’s okay because they’re extremely high up in a hot air balloon lol.”

It is important to note that these views are speculative at best, and there’s no reliable basis for concluding that Mitte was struggling based on his appearance in the footage alone. Nor does the available reporting establish that the video captured a warning sign or that Moncada expressed the specific concern described in online discussion.

RJ Mitte’s final public appearances before his death

Days before the Balloon Fiesta, on September 30, 2026, Mitte attended a screening and question-and-answer session for his film Talking to Strangers at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills, California. In the romantic drama, Mitte played ‘Joshua’, a rigid loner with cerebral palsy who forms an unlikely friendship with ‘Marty’, played by Lin Yin. The project was among his recent acting work as he continued to build a career beyond his best-known television role.

Mitte appeared in all five seasons of Breaking Bad, which aired from 2008 to 2013. His portrayal of ‘Walter White Jr.’, the son of Bryan Cranston’s ‘Walter White’ and Anna Gunn’s ‘Skyler White ‘, drew on his own experience living with cerebral palsy. He also appeared in Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice, with early television credits including Hannah Montana and Everybody Hates Chris. His work earned him the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award in 2013.

Outside acting, Mitte became a prominent advocate for disability awareness and inclusion. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s and was president of The Mitte Foundation, which supports philanthropic and community initiatives.
