Collin Gosselin recently made explosive claims about the abuse he endured as a child at the hands of his former reality TV star mother, Kate Gosselin. In his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, slated for release on October 13, 2026, Collin makes these explosive claims.
Collin Gosselin claims to have proof of abuse by his mother
During his recent appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast, On Purpose, Collin revisited the abuse and revealed that he had proof to support his allegations that his mother, Kate Gosselin, locked him in a basement closet. Opening up about the same, Collin said:
“It’s not just like a bedroom where, you know, that’s a part of the house that, you know, you just put your kid in, and you flip the lock around and lock them. She had a room specifically built in the storage part of our unfinished basement; it was cinder block walls and cement floors. [The room] was a full-effort operation of [Kate’s] to silence me, and make sure I had no way to tell anybody what was going on.”
When Collin claimed that his mother, Kate, used to lock him in a closet, she denied allegations surrounding the room. However, Collin presented proof of a document allegedly written by a registered nurse at the Fairmount mental health facility where he was put in by Kate. Later in the podcast, Collin said Kate dumped him there for no reason. He claimed that Kate never wanted him to come out and tell the world what she did to him.

In the podcast, Collin revealed that the notes contained a quote from Kate that read, “He always tells wild stories. Yes, I have a room that I lock him in, and a psychiatrist approved that.” Revealing how he has the evidence to back his claims about being locked inside a closet by Kate, Collin shared, ‘No psychiatrist would ever approve that ever.’
What accusations did Collin Gosselin levy on his mother, Kate Gosselin?
Collin has been open about his difficult childhood and has also stated how he was abused by his mom, Kate, when he was young. He claimed that his mother would get physically aggressive and often abused him verbally too. Collin also revealed that Kate would zip-tie him and lock him inside a basement for several days at a time.

After Jon and Kate divorced in 2009, the latter was given custody of their children. Things took an ugly turn when Kate sent Collin to a behavioral health institution in 2016 when he was 12, following what she described as “unpredictable and violent behavior.” Kate once talked about her strained relationship and stated that her son had multiple psychiatric diagnoses over time, and he was placed in the facility for her safety and his own well-being. However, Kate’s ex-husband and Collin’s father, Jon, stated that Kate institutionalized their son without any mental health diagnosis and created a diagnosis later.
