Actor Ben Affleck has opened up about his difficult experience working on Justice League, calling the film’s reshoots the “low point” of his career. During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Affleck criticised the circumstances surrounding director Zack Snyder’s departure from the DC film and alleged that the death of Snyder’s daughter was used as an ‘excuse’ to replace him.
Warner Bros. brought in Joss Whedon to complete Justice League after Snyder stepped away from the project following the death of his daughter, Autumn Snyder, who died by suicide in March 2017.
Reflecting on the experience, Affleck said, “The experience of Justice League was so negative for lots of different reasons, some of which have to do with where I was at personally and some of which had to do with the tragedy that happened at that time.”
He added, “I saw how not to make a movie like that, which is where the studio is at odds with the filmmaker. You are really making a mistake. I was really glad and gratified that Zack got to release (his version via the Snyder Cut). That was great. I was really happy for him. That was shitty, him being taken off that movie and the reshoots that we did. If you want the low point of my career, it was that.”
Affleck also spoke about the circumstances surrounding Snyder’s exit, criticising the way the filmmaker’s personal tragedy was handled. He said, “Somebody’s death by suicide eclipses everything. The way in which that was, I thought, used as an excuse was one of the shittiest things I’ve ever seen. It was so gross. The whole environment and vibe on set during the reshoots, much of which I was not privy to but heard secondhand from the actors, it was just, ‘Wow, this is about as gross as it gets.’”

“And I was drinking too much… and I got divorced. It was a difficult time for me personally, but those things, while painful, did not impact that movie,” he added.
Snyder had been developing Justice League as a continuation of his DC films Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Following his departure, Whedon oversaw substantial changes to the film, including new scenes and a different approach to its tone. Snyder later estimated that Whedon’s reshoots covered around 60 pages of new material.
Released in theatres in November 2017, Justice League received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially relative to expectations. The production also came under further scrutiny after actors Ray Fisher and Gal Gadot made allegations about Whedon’s conduct during the reshoots. Whedon denied allegations of misconduct made against him.
