Social media personality and model Gracie Bon has found herself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. She recently turned the destruction left behind by the Panama earthquake into a backdrop for a photo op. For those unaware, the country was hit by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake last week, causing a lot of damage. After she posted photos of herself surrounded by the rubble, it led to significant backlash online.
Gracie Bon faces flak for posing in the middle of the Panama earthquake rubble
Gracie Bon’s post showing her posing in the middle of the rubble did not seem to land the way that she wanted. Critics accused her of using the natural disaster as a photo opportunity. Notably, the earthquake that struck Panama on October 9, 2026, caused major structural damage, leaving fans without homes. Reports state that at least 27 people were injured in the 7.7-magnitude earthquake.
Along with the photo where Gracie can be seen wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, the influencer penned a message encouraging her 11 million followers to support all those who have been affected by the disaster. She wrote:
“The reality of my country after the earthquake. We’re reminded that material things can be replaced, but life is priceless. Hug your loved ones a little tighter, be grateful for what you have, live in the moment, and show up for those who need it most.”
Social media users questioned if Gracie’s real intention was to use the destruction as well as the suffering of others to attract attention and engagement. Despite receiving heat in the comments about her pictures, Gracie decided to respond to the haters with a video.
She claimed that she went to the scene of the destruction to donate resources to families and help rebuild their lives. She also said that people are more outraged by a photo than by seeing families lose everything. Gracie pointed out that sometimes the problem is not what we do, but the eyes with which we decide to see it. In her Instagram Stories, she wrote:
“I’m not posing, I’m simply appearing in the photo on my post. If I hadn’t appeared in the photos, would they have been more acceptable to you? I’m not monetizing a single cent from the situation in my country.”
Later, Gracie took to her Stories once again, sharing more context. She claimed that all the news in her country was showing a perfect city after the high-magnitude earthquake. But that was not the reality, and she wanted to take pictures of how it really looked. According to her, the media was only showing “the cute part” of her country. She added:
“I will continue to help these families. No lives were lost, but they lost their homes and everything they had worked their entire lives for. I wanted you to see the reality of what is happening in Panama, and I guess that mission was accomplished. Now, please help. These families need us.”
