Mulugu: The scorching heat on one side, depleting groundwater levels on the other, and growing concerns over the impact of El Nino — water scarcity has emerged as one of the major challenges facing agriculture, not just in Telangana but across the country.
With borewells running dry and farmers being forced to spend more on pumping water to save their crops, a borewell in Mulugu district is proving to be a remarkable exception.
Flowing continuously for the past 12 years without the need for a motor, it has been irrigating 30 acres of farmland.
Defying the pulls of changing seasons and rising temperatures, the perennial water source has become a ray of hope for local farmers.
Unaffected by heat or seasons!
The unusual phenomenon is found in the borewell on the farmland of farmer Kunta Ranga Reddy in Shivapuram village of Eturnagaram mandal in Mulugu district.
Farmers are no strangers to groundwater levels plummeting during summer and crops facing the threat of drying up when rains are delayed.
However, water from the borewell on Ranga Reddy’s land continues to flow throughout the year.
What makes it even more remarkable is that no motor is required to draw the water.
“The borewell has been supplying water continuously for the past 12 years.
There is no difference between summer, monsoon and winter — the flow has never stopped.
Apart from our 20 acres, another 10 acres belonging to neighbouring farmers are also being irrigated with this water.
Since the water flows without a motor, there is no electricity expenditure either.
We are delighted that this borewell is benefiting so many farmers,” Ranga Reddy said.
Relief for farmers, a natural wonder
At a time when climate change, uncertain rainfall and groundwater availability are major concerns, the uninterrupted flow has raised hopes among farmers.
Ranga Reddy is confident that water scarcity will not be a major concern for them even if the impact of El Niño continues for another decade.
However, feelings are that the reasons behind the continuous flow of water from the borewell, including the local groundwater conditions and geological formations, need to be established through an assessment by relevant experts.
Whatever the explanation, at a time when farmers are struggling to secure irrigation water, the fact that a single borewell has been sustaining 30 acres of farmland stands out as a remarkable story.
