RJ Mitte, who was best known for his portrayal in the neo-Western crime drama TV series Breaking Bad, died by suicide on October 12, 2026. He was 34 when he tragically passed away. The sudden death of RJ Mitte was indeed shocking and heartbreaking. Amid his tragic death, the Daily Mail obtained some devastating messages sent by RJ Mitte to his friend over the years.
RJ Mitte opened up about the challenges faced in Hollywood
The Breaking Bad actor spent years privately challenging Hollywood to give disabled actors more opportunities. According to reports, RJ Mitte lived with cerebral palsy. The Daily Mail obtained dozens of text messages that RJ exchanged with his friend over the past eight years, from 2017 to 2025. In a text dated April 7, 2017, Mitte described some uncomfortable encounters with casting directors.

The 34-year-old actor mentioned that when he went for the audition, the casting directors used to say that it was not a character with a disability. He wrote, “I’m like, why can’t the character be disabled? They get real uncomfortable when I say that.” According to Breaking Bad star, casting an actor with a disability could add depth to a character without requiring the entire storyline to revolve around his disability.
While RJ Mitte got a breakthrough with the show Breaking Bad, the success did not lead to as many acting opportunities as he had hoped. Sometimes Mitte felt frustrated as the casting directors judged him on his physical limitations rather than his talent. The 34-year-old actor wanted to call them out but eventually decided not to do so. He continued auditioning and accepting work, including projects that filmed outside the United States.
In a December 2017 text, Mitte revealed working on a television pilot that never progressed further. In February 2019, he discussed working on an independent film in Sydney, Australia. Although he enjoyed the experience, he worried that working on international projects would make it difficult to maintain his health insurance in the United States. He wrote:
“I would like to work enough to keep my [health] insurance. Pain in the ass lol.”
In 2020, when the entertainment industry shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, RJ Mitte continued looking for opportunities. However, by March 2021, he believed the pandemic had created another obstacle for disabled artists, complaining that some people in the entertainment industry appeared to regard actors with disabilities as greater health or insurance risks.
According to reports, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. During his childhood, the actor wore leg braces and sometimes used crutches or a wheelchair. As an adult, the most noticeable effects were on his left hand and speech. Mitte believed that disabled actors deserved opportunities both in front of and behind the camera, and that television audiences should see artists with disabilities portrayed in ordinary, multifaceted roles. Expressing his frustration, Mitte wrote in a text:
“There’s a lot I could do, if given the chance.”
