A member of The Repair Shop has posted an update on their YouTube channel about an undertaking of theirs’ that is continuing to cause major issues even after a lot of work
A leading member of The Repair Shop team has issued a disappointing update about a major project that continues to give them headaches despite weeks of work.
The BBC show features many talented craftspeople who help members of the public restore their beloved belongings. However, the experts also have projects they work on in their spare time.
Dominic Chinea, 40, who has been on the show since 2017, is an expert metalworker based in Cornwall, having moved there from Kent a few years ago. He has a warehouse where he works on mainly automotive-based projects. One example is his Land Rover TD5, which he has been trying to restore and get ready for its MOT.
In a recent episode posted on his YouTube channel, Dominic, who lives in the region with his wife Maria and their dog Wendy, said he was trying to sort out a rust problem after finding some in the front part of the car near the engine.
After successfully identifying where the rust was, around the floor panels, he thought he was on track to make significant progress. However, in a video posted on October 12, he found this was not to be the case. He explained: “And now things are taking a bit of a turn for the worse.
“As you can see the rot is a lot higher than I first expected. And I can’t get access to the back of that part of the panel because there’s an inner arch on that front of it that’s right in the way.
“I tried the best I could to get to it from just the front inside the footwell, but I just couldn’t get to everywhere I needed to get to. So, there’s only one thing for it. I’m going to have to take that inner wing out.”
There was a problem, as Dominic explained that he had never done this before, meaning the work took him much longer than expected. He added: “I very quickly realised that inner wing is not coming out without removing the entire front wing which means the front panel has to come out.
“I’m basically dismantling the entire front of the car just to repair this footwell. What a nightmare. I’ve never taken one of these off before, so it took a while.”
When Dominic reached the end of the day, he was frank about how he was feeling after working on the Land Rover all day and removing some of the front panels.
Yet he remained optimistic about the future. He added: “I’m absolutely exhausted and to be honest, really quite depressed. The rust is worse than I was expecting.
“It creeps up that footwell further than I thought and I just, I needed to get to the back of it, but there was that damn arch lining that I thought I could take out, apparently I couldn’t.
“I have ended up stripping the entire front end of the car. I’m holding out to do the chassis and bulkhead together; it will be a much bigger project.”
Dominic returns to UK screens tonight (October 14) when The Repair Shop: Beyond the Barn is broadcast on BBC One at 8pm.
