Hyderabad:An elderly man, Fameem Badshah from Kurnool, allegedly abandoned at Osmania General Hospital, is under treatment as his son is yet to arrive to take him home. The son responded after a video of the man went viral, following an appeal by homeguard Mohammad Asad Qadri.

Qadri, attached to Afzalgunj police station and posted at the hospital outpost, has appealed to the government for a 2BHK house under its housing scheme. He said such support would ease his financial burden and allow him to continue assisting abandoned elderly people and others in distress.

“Most of the elderly left here are in critical condition. Some die, others suffer fractures or severe health problems. Many lie in distress, with mosquitoes swarming around them,” Qadri said.

He earns about ₹29,000 a month and supports his wife and five daughters. A large portion of his salary goes towards rent, leaving little for family needs. A house, he said, would help him educate his daughters and continue his service to the abandoned.

Over five years, Qadri has helped nearly 3,000 people — reuniting missing children with parents, reconnecting elderly with families, and arranging final rites for unclaimed bodies. “When I see elderly people, I remember my parents and their sacrifices. I appeal to their children not to abandon them. I try to contact families and persuade them to take them home. Not everyone agrees, but some do,” he said.

He recalled helping an Iranian national who was brought dead to the hospital. With a letter from the police station, authorities contacted the man’s family, which arranged to take the body back.

Qadri said he is now the only Home Guard handling such cases, also completing paperwork for final rites across communities. When no family or representative comes forward, the GHMC or the concerned community arranges the rites, he added.
