Haveri: Haveri MP and Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday demanded a CBI investigation into alleged sting operations targeting Karnataka ministers, saying the truth behind the operations and their purpose should be probed.

Speaking to reporters in Haveri, Bommai said Chief Minister Shivakumar had reportedly warned five ministers during a Cabinet meeting that sting operations were being conducted and that they should be careful.

“If the Chief Minister himself has warned five ministers in the Cabinet, in the presence of everyone, he must have some information. How can he say this without having any information?” Bommai asked.

Bommai said sting operations, which were earlier conducted in specific cases, were increasingly being used for political gains or to suppress opponents. He questioned why the government had not initiated a probe despite the Chief Minister’s statements.

“When the Chief Minister says sting operations are taking place and then remains silent, questions naturally arise. Is this being done to create confusion or to frighten Cabinet ministers? An investigation should bring out the truth,” he said.

“A CBI investigation would be appropriate. The probe should be conducted by an agency independent of the state’s political environment. The government must take a decision immediately and ensure that the truth comes out,” he said.

“DK Shivakumar is not someone who would simply fire a shot into the air. He must have some information, which is why he made the statement. He also said on Tuesday that he was ready to share the information with whoever conducts the investigation. It would be better if he ordered a probe himself,” Bommai said.
