Tonight, we turn our attention to the Europa League and a competition in which there is a huge disparity in the quality of the teams.
We’ve identified a three-leg acca with teams to win and over one goal in the contest.
The first is Sunderland’s trip to Portugal to face Torreense. The hosts provided one of the biggest shocks in European football last season by claiming the Portuguese Cup in shades of the Wearsiders’ 1973 FA Cup triumph. But the fact remains they are a lower-ranked second division club and have won one league game in seven this season.
Sunderland have not set the world alight in the Premier League so far but they should be too good in this one.
The second is AZ Alkmaar to cruise past Hapoel Beer Sheva. AZ showed at the Stadium of Light last month what a good side they are. They suffered their first Eredivisie defeat of the season at the weekend, going down 2-0 to title rivals Feyenoord, but they should get back on track against a side that sits fourth in the Israeli First Division.
And finally, we are going for Benfica to see off Celtic.
Lisbon may be one of Celtic’s favourite European cities given it was the venue of their 1967 European Cup success but it is unlikely to be a happy return.
Martin O’Neill’s men lost three games on the bounce prior to the international break but did beat Motherwell at the weekend to quieten the noise around their manager.
But Benfica are a very different beast. Now under former Fulham boss Marco Silva, they have won nine of their last 10 in all competitions and flexed their muscles with a 2-0 victory at AC Milan in their Europa League opener.
