Karisma Kapoor Once Spoke On Her 'Traumatic' Split From Abhishek Bachchan, 'Been Through A Lot...'

Karisma Kapoor was a 90s heartthrob who charmed audiences with her authentic character portrayals and good looks. Her fans loved her chemistry with co-stars, and she was shipped with quite a few of them; however, the ship that sailed for real was with Abhishek Bachchan, who is now married to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Karisma and Abhishek were quite serious about their relationship and even got engaged. However, their fiancé phase didn’t last long, as they parted ways before it could lead to marriage. After taking some time to heal from the trauma, Karisma, who recently appeared on Koffee with Karan 9, opened up about the heartbreak she experienced after her relationship with Abhishek ended.

Karisma Kapoor was ‘hurt’ and in ‘pain’ after her engagement with Abhishek Bachchan was called off

After Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan’s engagement ended in 2003, she took some time to wrap her head around the fact that it was no longer a part of her future. She took time off, retreated into her shell, healed, and later spoke about her heartbreak in a Rediff interview. Karisma called the phase “traumatic.” On why she stepped back from the spotlight then, she said she didn’t want to discuss her personal matters publicly.

Karisma added that she has always been a private person and wanted to keep it that way. However, since her and Abhishek’s engagement marked a union between two high-profile families, the Kapoors and the Bachchans, naturally public forums and tabloids were full of speculation about what might have gone wrong between them. Reiterating her decision to maintain ‘dignified silence,’ Karisma stated:

“It was deliberate. I withdrew into a shell. I just was not ready to go public with my grief. I chose a dignified silence because that is the kind of person I am. I have always been a woman of few words.”

Karisma Kapoor described the early months of 2003 as some of the hardest moments of her life after her split from Abhishek, and she finally broke her silence on the matter in a late 2003 interview with Rediff. The actress said that she wouldn’t wish such “pain” for any girl. Karisma knew it would take her quite some time to get past the grief; however, after a certain period of time, she knew she would put herself together again. In her words:

“The beginning of this year was traumatic for me. I wouldn’t wish any girl to go through it. I was forced to deal with my hurt and pain on my own. I guess time is the best healer. Though I have been through a lot, I have come to terms with whatever has happened.”

Karisma blamed her failed relationship on fate, believing whatever is destined for someone is bound to happen. She added that she wasn’t in a state to deal with her problems before, but now she was in a better space. Mentioning that one must go on no matter what, Karisma stated:

“All I will say is, whatever is destined is bound to happen. I was emotionally unprepared to confront my problems. Life deals you different cards. You have to just go with the shuffle.”

Karisma Kapoor credited her family for supporting her through the tough phase

Karisma thinks she wouldn’t have been able to move on and get back to normal life swiftly if her family didn’t stay by her side during the period. “I couldn’t have come out of my trauma if it wasn’t for my parents [Babita and Randhir Kapoor], sister [Kareena], my Dadiji [Krishna Raj Kapoor], my two Buas [Rima Jain and Ritu Nanda], and my close friends,” she shared.

After Karisma and Abhishek parted ways, she tied the knot with businessman Sunjay Kapur, and he got married to his lady love, Aishwarya Rai. Abhishek and Aishwarya are still married and share a daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan. As for Karisma, she split from Sunjay and has since taken on the role of a single mom to their two kids, Samaira and Kiaan.
