Torreense 1-2 Sunderland: Report, result and goals as Black Cats leave it late in Europe

Noah Sadiki scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Sunderland came from behind to beat Torreense 2-1 in the Europa League.

The Black Cats trailed for much of the contest after Volnei Feltes’ stunning first-half opener, but Jules Ahoka equalised before Sadiki struck in the third minute of added time.

Sunderland made a promising start, with Luke O’Nien heading wide from close range following Chris Rigg’s corner after just four minutes.

However, clear chances proved difficult to create against a well-organised Torreense defence, and the hosts took the lead in spectacular fashion after 37 minutes.

Amine Oudrhiri picked out Volnei, who unleashed a superb right-footed effort from outside the penalty area into the top corner.

Sunderland pushed for an equaliser after the break, with Omar Alderete going close from a free-kick before Nilson Angulo saw a header saved by Lucas Paes.

The Torreense goalkeeper then produced another excellent stop to deny Alderete as the visitors increased the pressure.

Sunderland made four substitutions shortly before the hour mark, introducing Granit Xhaka, Enzo Le Fee, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo.

The changes paid off in the 67th minute when Mukiele delivered a cross into the penalty area and Ahoka directed a header into the bottom corner.

Sunderland continued searching for a winner, although Sadiki missed a promising opportunity following a counter-attack in the 77th minute.

A VAR check also resulted in no penalty being awarded to Sunderland late on.

However, the visitors finally completed their comeback in stoppage time when Xhaka found Sadiki inside the box.

The midfielder fired a right-footed effort into the top-left corner to seal all three points and break Torreense hearts.

Luis Quintero went close to rescuing a point for the hosts moments later, but his long-range effort drifted narrowly wide.
