Anantapur:In a jolt for TD leaders aspiring for the mayor’s post in Anantapur Municipal Corporation (AMC), the mayoral seat has gone to the Bharatiya Janata Party at the end of the seat-sharing talks between the NDA alliance partners.

The development comes after considerable internal bickering for the post within the TD leaders – urban MLA and former MLA, with allegations of land grabbing surfacing targeting sitting legislator D. Prasad and his close associates.

This is reported to have helped BJP secure the mayoral seat at the last moment.

Jana Sena too had been trying hard for the post until the seat got reserved for BC general category.

The beneficiary within the BJP is believed to be Dr. B. Vikram, son of noted gynaecologist Dr. Vasundhara Devi, who runs a nursing home at Adimurthy Nagar in Anantapur town. The candidate is said to be a close relative of AP state BJP president P.V.N. Madhav.

However, BJP has not yet officially finalised its nominee.

In view of the mayoral post going to BJP, YSRC is said to have decided to change its candidate. Earlier, the YSR Congress had wanted to field a BC Muslim candidate for Anantapur mayor’s post. This is because in the previous polls, the party’s minority candidate had won the mayor post.

In view of the changed circumstances, YSRC has decided to choose a BC Hindu candidate, sources said.
