Hilary Swank has hit out at the backlash she’s received after announcing her third pregnancy at 52, with some branding the Oscar-winning actress ‘selfish’ for expecting again at her age
Hilary Swank has been forced to defend herself after she was labelled “selfish” for getting pregnant at 52. Those that weren’t impressed with her having twins at 47 are now up in arms once more, describing the actress as “too old” to be a mum again.
Oscar-winning Swank shares twins Ohm and Aya with her husband Philip Schneider, 53, and the couple are now gearing up to welcome their third child in December. Hilary has previously discussed why she didn’t become a mum sooner as she told Women’s Health UK: “I would have had kids earlier. I’m not saying I actively waited until 47. But that was a magical time in my life, when it all culminated. It was the right time for a myriad of reasons.”
Now, exciting news of her second pregnancy was confirmed in an announcement on Instagram earlier this week, with the family seen dancing in the dark wielding glow sticks attached to their bodies.
Hilary added a glowing outline of a tiny figure over her bump. “A lot of people have been asking what project I’m doing next, this one releases in December,” she wrote in the caption.
In a preview clip ahead of her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Million Dollar Baby star took aim at the criticism women face for having children later in life.
“There’s one story that I found really interesting,” she continued. “And I think I was attracted to this particular story because this one women said, ‘How dare you? You’re too old, and you won’t be old enough when your kids are older, and my dad was my favourite person and he died when I was in my early 20s, and it’s just devastation.”
Hilary went on to reveal she found the story particularly poignant given that she lost her own father in 2021.
“I related to it because my dad is also passed, but he was one of my favourite people on Earth, and I was drawn to that,” she continued.
“I thought to myself, ‘I would rather be born and have that person who was my favourite person and experience that than not at all’. You know what I’m saying? So, that’s how I took what she was saying.”
Despite the announcement, some have branded Hilary “selfish”.
“You really shouldn’t give hope to women who don’t have the same financial resources you have,” one of her 1.6 million followers raged. “Be honest and say you used donor eggs, or previously frozen eggs and IVF. This was NOT done naturally!”
A second critic blasted: “Imagine being 20 years old and your mother is 72. Honestly this is just selfish.”
A third concurred: “All fun and game until she’s 65 and raising a teenager. I was in my 50’s and about killed me.”
Meanwhile, a fourth Instagram user remarked: “She is too old to be a mother again.”
Hilary also said in her Women’s Health UK interview she now makes a “very different parent” to that she would have been in her early forties.
“I’m much more patient,” she confessed. “I’m much more understanding. I am much more, I think, interested in a different way than I would’ve been. I’m really interested in their brains.
“I am fascinated about what makes them tick. And I have my career that’s already established, so I’m not divided. I’m able to really sink in and be present with them and be a hands-on parent.”
