Jon Gosselin is standing firmly behind his son, Collin Gosselin, as the 22-year-old revisits his troubled childhood in a tell-all memoir and makes sure his ex-wife, Kate Gosselin, knows her alleged lies will have consequences. As Jon publicly defends his son’s memoir, his past allegations about Kate and Collin’s institutionalization have resurfaced.
Jon and Kate divorced in 2009, and after nine years, Jon got full legal custody of Collin, along with a no-contact order with Kate. Now that Collin is speaking his truth, Jon says he “couldn’t be more proud of my son’s heartbreaking memoir and his mission to help other victims of abuse.”
Jon Gosselin’s past claims about Kate and Collin resurface amid new statements
Jon recently spoke out in support of Collin’s memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, telling Us Weekly on Thursday, October 15, 2026, that he was proud of his son’s decision to share his experiences. His statement also appeared to address Kate’s recent comments on TikTok about Collin and mental health.
After Kate posted a video about her dog on October 10, 2026, one commenter expressed support for her amid the renewed attention surrounding Collin’s book. Kate responded, “Thank you so much. I know rational, logical ppl or anyone who has dealt with mental illness understands what’s going on here.”
Jon pushed back in his statement, saying, “If you continue to falsely label my son Collin as ‘mentally ill,’ you will be held accountable.” He added that Collin had been evaluated by not one, but multiple independent psychiatrists and claimed those assessments disproved Kate’s repeated narratives about their son.
Jon continued, “Repeating false claims about his mental health is damaging to his reputation, his credibility, and his future. Consider this fair warning: The days of using mental health to discredit and silence my son are over.”

Jon’s recent comments mark yet another public clash in the former couple’s long-running family dispute, which has returned to the spotlight as Collin shares his account of growing up on television and the reality that nobody saw behind the scenes.
The dispute has renewed attention on Jon’s earlier comments about Kate’s decision to send Collin to a behavioral health facility when he was 12. During a 2019 appearance on The Dr. Oz Show, Jon alleged that Kate had institutionalized Collin without a diagnosis and then created one. He said:
“Kate institutionalized him without a diagnosis and then created a diagnosis. He did not need to be in an institution. Just because he was a difficult child did not mean he needed to be sent away against my will, against my rights. I did not know where he went. It took me two and a half years to find him. It took me another year to get him out.”
Jon also alleged that Collin had been cut off from his siblings, describing the situation as “parent alienation” and “sibling alienation.” These were Jon’s claims, while Kate has maintained that Collin needed treatment because of what she described as unpredictable and violent behavior.
Collin Gosselin’s memoir reopens years-long family rift after the reality show ended
Collin, who grew up alongside his seven siblings on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8, has used his memoir to describe what he says happened behind the scenes of the family’s reality show, which premiered in 2007. During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Collin said the family’s public image was far removed from his own experience. He said:
“When it was Jon & Kate Plus 8, even though it looked like America’s happiest, biggest family, behind the scenes it was not like that.”

Collin alleged that his mother began directing her “wrath” toward him when he was around eight years old. He also claimed she kept him in a room in the family’s unfinished basement, which he said had a bolt lock on the outside. He mentions in his memoir that most of his time was spent isolated in the basement room, except for tuition, and no other sibling was allowed to get near the basement.
Kate has repeatedly refuted these allegations. In a July 2023 Instagram statement, she described Collin’s account as a “distorted perception of reality” and said measures taken at home were recommended by his pediatric psychiatrist and other specialists. She also cited concerns about his behavior and the safety of family members.
Jon and Kate initially shared a highly publicized family life on television before their 2009 divorce. Kate was initially granted primary custody of their eight children. After Collin’s admission to Fairmount Behavioral Health System in Philadelphia in 2016, Jon challenged the decision and later gained custody of his son in 2018. His sister Hannah also later moved in with Jon.
Collin has remained estranged from Kate, and for Jon, his son has finally found the voice he had been looking for all along.
