NYCFC addresses impact of Man City scandal on MLS club dealings

The message from New York City FC officials about any concern over Manchester City’s Premier League scandal impacting the MLS club was that it’s “business as usual” in the Big Apple.

NYCFC chief operating officer Jennifer O’Sullivan indicated that the MLS club is not concerned after Manchester City, the sister club to NYCFC, was found guilty of more than 100 charges related to the Premier League’s financial regulations by an independent commission last month.

“No concern in New York,” O’Sullivan responded when asked by The Post about the situation’s potential impact on the club or on the naming rights sponsor of the club’s new home Etihad Park. “Everything here is business as usual. We’re on track with construction. We’re on track for our first game, July 17th, 2027. We’re really excited about that. So everything here has just been business as usual for us.”

The NYCFC COO spoke with reporters following a hard-hat tour of Etihad Park.

Manchester City and NYCFC are both owned by the same parent company, City Football Group, and the fallout surrounding the charges could have an impact across the organization, depending on what kind of penalties are levied against Man City.

NYCFC appears to be clear of any extra scrutiny from the MLS offices after league commissioner Don Garber said on Tuesday that they were not going to look into the club’s ownership.

Garber didn’t express any concern over the scandal or NYCFC’s ownership when he was asked about it during the Front Office Sports’ “Tuned In” summit in midtown Manhattan.

“MLS is looking at how owners act in accordance to our rules here in Major League Soccer,” Garber said.

“But we’re not in the business of looking what our team owners do in other leagues and frankly, I don’t think any league would view what other owners do when they have multiple investments throughout other sports,” he continued.
