Bhubaneswar: Braj Mohan Ram, a former three-time Lok Sabha member from Jharkhand, was on Sunday sworn in as the 28th Governor of Odisha, formally taking charge as the constitutional head of the state at a ceremony at Lok Bhavan here.
Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, Justice Harish Tandon, administered the oath of office and secrecy to Ram in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister Jual Oram, Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, members of the Council of Ministers, senior government officials and other dignitaries.
The ceremony marked the beginning of Ram’s tenure as Governor following his appointment by President Droupadi Murmu on October 12. He succeeds Hari Babu Kambhampati, who assumed office on January 3, 2025.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal and state vice-president Biranchi Narayan Tripathy, besides several ministers, intellectuals and distinguished personalities, attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Ram’s appointment is part of a wider reshuffle of gubernatorial appointments announced by the President, involving six states. The appointments took effect from the dates on which the respective appointees assumed charge.
A seasoned politician from Jharkhand, Ram represented the Palamu Lok Sabha constituency three times, winning elections in 1996, 1998 and 1999. He had earlier served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 1991 to 1995, before Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar as a separate state in November 2000.
A graduate of Ranchi University, Ram comes to the gubernatorial office after decades in public life and organisational politics. His political career has been rooted in the Palamu region, where he emerged as a prominent leader of the BJP.
