The Spanish League has been played at a rapid pace this season. Two rounds took place over two days this weekend.
The highlight of the double round was an encounter between Barceloneta and Sabadell, played in the 8th round today. The reigning national and European champion recorded a 12:9 victory. It was Barceloneta’s second win over Sabadell this week, after a 16:9 triumph in the Spanish Super Cup several days ago.
Barceloneta got off to an excellent start, taking a 5:1 lead in the first quarter that set the tone for the rest of the game. The title holder maintained a 4-goal difference for a long time, and increased its lead to five goals on a few occasions. However, Sabadell attempted to come back. Between the 21st and 23rd minutes, the visitors went on a quick 3-goal run to cut the gap from 4:9 to 7:9. Francesco Di Fulvio stopped Sabadell’s series, and his fellow countryman, Gonzalo Echenique, added a goal. Barceloneta rebuilt a 4-goal difference (11:7) shortly before the last break. Barceloneta scored a little bit in the final period, but controlled the match until the very end.
Bernat Sanahuja scored four goals for Barceloneta, and Francesco Di Fulvio followed him with three. Kanstantin Averka found Barceloneta’s net four times.
The clash between the Champions League clubs wasn’t the only big derby in the 7th round. The teams that play in the Euro Cup, Barcelona and Terrassa, faced off. Barcelona led for most of the match, but Terrassa persistently chased the home side. Barcelona entered the final period leading 11:9. Terrassa caught up with the rival (12:12) midway through the fourth quarter . Barcelona scored two goals in the final 105 seconds to secure a 14:12 victory.
Pol Prat led Barcelona with three goals, but Terrassa’s Albert Sabadell was the game’s top scorer with four.
After today’s derbies, Barceloneta and Barcelona remain the only two unbeaten teams.
