Kurnool: The municipal election nomination process in Kadapa district was marred by tension and allegations of obstruction, with YSR Congress (YSRCP) candidates unable to file nominations for chairperson posts in four municipalities. In contrast, the process concluded peacefully in Kurnool and Nandyal districts.

Tensions escalated on October 17 and 18, the last two days of nominations, with YSRCP candidates alleging that Telugu Desam (TD) workers prevented them from filing their papers.

No YSRCP candidates filed nominations for chairperson posts in Kamalapuram Nagar Panchayat and Mydukur, Rayachoti and Yerraguntla municipalities. In Kamalapuram, party nominee Marujolla Kavitha reportedly tried to file her nomination until 3 pm on Sunday but returned without submitting it, allegedly due to obstruction by TD workers.

The party also failed to field ward candidates in these four urban local bodies. In Kadapa Municipal Corporation, YSRCP nominees filed papers in only 16 of the 66 divisions. Similar allegations of obstruction were reported from parts of Proddatur and Jammalamadugu.

Meanwhile, nominations proceeded without major incidents in Kurnool, Yemmiganur, Adoni, Nandyal, Allagadda, Nandikotkur, Dhone, Atmakur and Bethamcherla.

TD candidates in Kamalapuram, Rayachoti, Yerraguntla and Mydukur are expected to be elected unopposed, as no rival candidates entered the fray, according to the latest information available.

Police registered cases against around 70 people following clashes during the nomination process. A case was also registered against Shaik Shareef Jinna, the YSRCP chairperson nominee in Rayachoti.
