The only way Jalen Hurts will return this season: ‘Life-or-death situation’

Don’t expect Jalen Hurts back on the field anytime soon.

The Eagles quarterback, who was placed on injured reserve due to a blood clot, will only return this season if the clot is “completely melted,” Jay Glazer said on the “Fox NFL Sunday” pregame show.

“At first the blood clot was superficial; it wasn’t moving around,” Glazer began, explaining why Hurts initially played with the clot last Sunday in London against the Jaguars. “But once it changed and that blood clot started moving, you do not mess around with a moving blood clot. That could be a life-or-death situation.

“The only way really for Jalen Hurts to come back — if he can come back this season — is that blood clot needs to be completely melted. They have to have several different scans to make sure it’s completely gone. Because if it’s not, and if it floats up to the wrong areas, it’d be very, very dangerous.”

ESPN reported on Saturday that Hurts will be out “indefinitely.” Tanner McKee is starting in his place. The Eagles also signed Joe Milton off the Cowboys’ practice squad.

The move to injured reserve means Hurts will miss a minimum of four games, including Sunday’s home tilt against the Panthers, next week’s home “Monday Night Football” game against the Cowboys, a Week 8 road “Sunday Night Football” clash with the Commanders and a Week 9 home contest against the Giants. Philly has its bye in Week 10 and then returns to action on Nov. 22 against the Steelers.

The Eagles, who have dealt with turmoil on offense with Lane Johnson’s retirement, the trade of Cam Jurgens — as well as injuries to running backs Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley — were 2-3 entering Sunday’s game against the Panthers, having lost three straight.

In five games, Hurts, 28, has 933 yards passing with eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 57.8 completion percentage.
