The text messages show that Katie pushed for two media appearances that were ultimately scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026, and Friday, October 16, 2026. On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Katie messaged a White House official saying she wanted to do morning and evening news interviews. She wrote:
“I’d like to do news hits morning and evening.”
Two appearances were subsequently arranged for Katie. One with Fox News host Sean Hannity on the evening of October 15, 2026, and another on Fox & Friends on the morning of October 16, 2026. During the interviews, Zacharia struggled to answer questions confidently and explain some issues beyond prepared political issues. One major topic was her failure to pass the California bar examination, which is required to become a licensed attorney in California.
During her interview with Sean Hannity, Katie defended her performance at the White House briefing. She explained that she had been in the job for fewer than eight hours and had received a briefing book that morning. Some reports suggested that the interviews might have been deliberately arranged to embarrass Zacharia. Katie’s appearances were so unsteady that one source in a Politico story termed it a ‘sanctioned hit’.
The source suggested that Susie Wiles, Donald Trump’s White House chief of staff, might have been involved in arranging the interviews to make Katie Zacharia look bad. Wiles had reportedly not approved Zacharia’s appointment before she was hired.
