Vernon Kay has spoken about Moby’s iconic album Play bringing back deeply unpleasant memories of a seasick-stricken Tenerife fishing trip he shared with Tess Daly.

Vernon Kay has revealed the uncomfortable memory that has made it impossible for him to listen to one of Moby’s best-known albums, recalling a holiday with his wife Tess Daly that took an unfortunate turn.

The BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter shared the story ahead of Moby’s appearance on the station, explaining how a fishing trip in Tenerife left him feeling so unwell that the musician’s album Play has been difficult to listen to ever since.

Vernon described the excursion as a miserable experience, with rough seas turning what should have been an enjoyable holiday activity into something he has never forgotten.

He said: “Can’t listen to that Moby Play album, I cannot listen to that, because we, Tess and I, went on a holiday together to Tenerife, and we went on a fishing trip. And the waves were terrible.”

The presenter went on to explain that the conditions proved difficult for everyone on board, with the group struggling to cope as the boat rocked in the choppy waters, reports the Express.

He said: “Every single person on the fishing trip, about ten of us. Every single person, I’m not even lying. I’m not exaggerating. I am telling you the truth. Every single person was sicky, sicky, poo, poo.”

The situation became so unpleasant that passengers were either being sick over the side of the boat or heading to the communal toilet.

But it was the music playing during the trip that gave the experience a lasting association with Moby’s album.

Vernon recalled: “Either over the side, or in the communal toilet, it was grim. And the music playing in the background was Moby’s Play album.”

The presenter explained that the memory still affects him whenever he hears one of the tracks, with the music bringing back the sensations he experienced at sea.

He said: “So every time I hear a single track from that, I am swaying like a flag in the breeze. It’s horrendous.”

The anecdote comes days after Vernon celebrated a milestone for his eldest daughter Phoebe during his Radio 2 show, reflecting on how quickly she has grown up.

Speaking to fellow presenter Sara Cox on Friday, October 16, Vernon revealed that Phoebe was turning 22.

“It’s our eldest daughter’s birthday today,” he said, before asking: “Where? Where has that time gone?”

He later shared a series of photographs on social media to mark the occasion, writing: “Happy Birthday PHOEBE KAY! ! ! 22 Time flies! ! A joy watching you become the woman you are!”
