Hyderabad: The city soaked in festive spirit on Maha Navami, with families in traditional attire visiting temples and Durga Puja mandaps.

Several organisations performed Ayudha Puja, decorating tools and instruments before offering prayers.

At Peddamma Gudi in Jubilee Hills, a cinema production house carried out the ritual, its managing director P. Kiran noted, “We have been doing this on Navami for nearly three and a half decades.

This is the day when employees of all cadres gather and dine together.”

Families also observed Bommala Koluvu, displaying toys and inviting relatives and friends.

Organisers said the age-old tradition teaches preservation and showcases variety.

The Bengali Cultural Association, Banjara Hills, celebrated Sandhi Puja at Banjara Function Hall.

Committee member Sanjay Pan said the festival brings together people of all religions and castes.

He recalled meeting Vilayat Ali Siddiqui, who shifted from Trivandrum to Hyderabad this year and continues to visit Durga pandals in memory of his late wife, Dipali Bhattacharya.

As the last day for Dandiya and Garba, several events drew large crowds.

Kavita Jain said, “The nine-day celebration aims to preserve and promote India’s rich cultural heritage through Garba, devotional ceremonies and community participation.”

Preparations for the 54th Ramlila are in full swing at Exhibition Grounds, Nampally, where the Rajasthani Pragathi Samaj will set fire to an 18-foot effigy of Ravana.

At Suraj Bhan Garden near Shaikpet, more than 1,000 devotees joined Maa Durga Puja celebrations.

Organiser Manish Kumar said, “Maa Durga Puja has been happening here since 1964.

It is meaningful for our family as families come together and celebrate with devotion.”
