Shops in Patel Market gutted, major mishap averted

Hyderabad:A major accident was averted after a massive fire broke out in Asia’s largest cloth market, Patel Market, behind the High Court on Monday. Five shops were gutted, but no casualties were reported as the market was closed.

District fire officer Venkanna said the fire command control received a call at 9.51 am from M.D. Khadder. “Fifty‑six firefighters engaged in the operation extinguished the fire by 1.15 pm,” he told Deccan Chronicle. Six fire tenders were mobilised, and the area was cordoned off for public safety.

Commanding officer V. Bhanu Pratap, ADFO, studied the topography and deployed teams. The fire originated at Bombay Hosiery on the first floor, spreading rapidly due to lack of access. Firefighters broke shutters and, risking their lives, gained entry using a ladder from an adjacent terrace to bring the blaze under control.

Patel Market, housing over 5,000 wholesale and retail cloth shops, saw major damage averted. Hussainalam police registered a case, with preliminary investigation pointing to an electrical short circuit at Bombay Hosiery. Assessment of property loss is underway.

Water tenders were sent from the High Court station at 9.52 am, Salar Jung Museum unit at 10.29 am, Moghalpura and Yakutpura at 10.29 am. Separately, a water bowser was sent from the Gowliguda station at 10.29 am.

Traffic police seize 100 vehicles for fake plates

Hyderabad:Hyderabad traffic police, during a special enforcement drive against violations of traffic and Motor Vehicles Act rules over the past eight months, booked 100 criminal cases and seized 100 vehicles.

Joint commissioner of city traffic police D. Joel Davis said on Sunday that the drive was aimed at curbing misuse of registration numbers and strengthening enforcement. “Our staff intensified checks against vehicles displaying fake, forged, tampered and unauthorised registration number plates,” he said.

The drive was undertaken following increasing complaints of fraudulent plates being used to conceal vehicle identities, evade enforcement and avoid statutory regulations. Of the 100 vehicles seized, 88 were two‑wheelers and 12 were four‑wheelers.

Davis said the use of fraudulent plates is a serious violation of law and poses challenges to traffic enforcement, crime prevention and public safety. “Such practices facilitate concealment of identities, obstruct investigations and enable evasion of accountability,” he said.

The traffic police reiterated that vehicle owners must comply with specifications prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, including High‑Security Registration Plate (HSRP) requirements. Fake numbers, altered digits, unauthorised fonts, decorative lettering, stickers or any modification that conceals or misrepresents genuine registration numbers are prohibited.

“Vehicle owners must ensure plates are genuine, clearly visible and legible, and maintained in accordance with prescribed standards. Focused enforcement drives against fraudulent, altered or unauthorised plates will continue,” Davis added.

Student dies of electrocution at Jubilee Hills

Hyderabad:An 18‑year‑old intermediate student, who had come to his uncle’s house in Jubilee Hills during the Dussehra holidays, died of electrocution on Saturday night. Police said the victim, Prabhu Kiran, was electrocuted while opening the main gate at his uncle Rajinikanth’s residence on Road No. 70. A live wire that had dropped from a pole had come in contact with the gate.

Family members immediately switched off the power supply and rushed him to Apollo Hospital, Filmnagar, where doctors declared him dead. Kiran, a native of Kesamudram mandal in Mahbubabad district, had come to his uncle’s house in Saidaiah Nagar MLA Colony for the festival holidays.

Police booked a case of suspicious death based on a complaint filed by his uncle. “The case is under investigation. Stern action will be taken after completion of inquiry. The body was handed over to family members after post‑mortem at OGH on Sunday,” an officer said.
