A former Mets coach is under consideration for a return to oversee the team’s hitting department.
Kevin Long, the Mets hitting coach the last time the club reached the World Series in 2015, is scheduled to speak with team officials Tuesday about a coaching position, according to an industry source.
Long, 59, was fired last week by the Phillies after five seasons with the club.
The Mets have a vacancy after director of major league hitting Jeff Albert was recently fired. Albert served one season in the position.
Hitting coach Troy Snitker and assistant hitting coach Rafael Fernandez were retained by the Mets.
Long’s résumé includes World Series titles with the Yankees and Nationals. In the latter stop he forged a relationship with Juan Soto, who arrived in the major leagues as Long’s tenure in Washington began.
It is not believed that Long has spoken to any other teams about a position.
Long’s tenure in Philadelphia included a World Series appearance in 2022.
He spent three seasons with the Mets and was a finalist for the managerial position that went to Mickey Callaway before the 2018 season.
