Christina Applegate cried in her new podcast as she revealed she had been misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) but now feels she is back to square one
Christina Applegate has shockingly revealed she has been misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
The 54-year-old star thought she has been battling the autoimmune disease which damages the central nervous system for years following a diagnosis in 2021, but in her new podcast, she revealed she was misdiagnosed.
Over the years, Christina has spoken out about being bedbound amid her health battles. She has been open about how the original diagnosis and symptoms affected her mental health and had previously said how she had 30 lesions in her brain.
Speaking on her MeSsy podcast, she said: “My doctor came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS’. I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”
Whilst those around her were thrilled that that wasn’t her diagnosis, she said she still suffers with very debilitating systems and feels like she is back to square one and has to start afresh.
“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of the sudden I’m better. I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse,” she explained to co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler, “So I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me.
“And that’s going to be an online investigation that my doctors are going to be getting into just to find out what has been going on since 2021, why did this happen?”
Christina was emotional as she explained how she “lost everything” because of her diagnosis and now doesn’t know where to turn.
“I’ve gone through a great depression because of it. But I lost everything. I lost my job. I lost – I’m sorry. What do you say to someone who’s been living with this for six years – God, I’m so sorry – because it stopped my life,” she said.
“I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”
She added: “It’s weird because I feel like I let everybody down. It’s this weird feeling because I became this — you and I, the poster children for MS. And everything I was doing. I had a reason. I had a reason as to why my day sucked every day. And now I don’t have a reason and it’s very unnerving and it’s very confusing for me.”
Christina feels like she’s playing “the same game with a different name” now and admits she has been in a “state of shock” since learning about her misdiagnosis. She said it has taken her months to process the news.
In 2021, Christina revealed her diagnosis after suffering with various symptoms including numb toes, severe pain and loss of balance. The numbness moved up her ankles and to her knees, with her friend Selma Blair urging her to get checked.
