VIJAYAWADA: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials seized gold and foreign currency worth `5.84 crore and arrested five persons in two separate smuggling cases.
Acting on a tip-off about gold being illegally transported from Bangladesh to Hyderabad via Kolkata, DRI officials intercepted three carriers travelling by bus from Hyderabad and arrested them. The officials found gold concealed in their bags and tied around their waists. A total of 3.147 kg of gold bars was seized from them.
In a separate operation, officials checking vehicles intercepted a car on the outskirts of Vijayawada. They found $60,000 and `21,500 concealed in a secret compartment and seized the foreign currency.
Five persons were arrested in connection with the two cases involving gold and foreign currency smuggling. The DRI has launched an investigation to gather further details about the gold smuggling network.
