Inter off the mark at third time of asking
Inter Milan claimed their first Champions League win of the season by beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at San Siro despite Alessandro Bastoni’s red card.
The Nerazzurri were reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute after Bastoni received two yellow cards in three minutes, the second coming after he put his hands in the face of a Shakhtar player in an off-the-ball incident.
Nine minutes later, though, Inter took the lead as a wonderfully worked break ended with Augusto expertly controlling a superb floated pass from Henrikh Mkhitaryan before prodding the ball beyond Dmytro Ryznik.
That marked Shakhtar’s first defeat of the league phase, and Sporting CP also fell from the ranks of the unbeaten teams as they slipped to a stunning 3-2 loss at home to LASK Linz, who claimed their first Champions League win.
Luis Suarez put Sporting ahead from the penalty spot in the fifth minute, only for Christoph Lang to level 10 minutes later.
The turnaround was completed in the 63rd minute when Sasa Kalajdzic capped off a LASK counter-attack to give the Austrian side the lead, which was doubled five minutes later as Krystof Danek fired a superb finish into the bottom corner.
Suarez’s second gave Sporting hope of salvaging a point, but LASK held on to write a wonderful new chapter in their history.
Real Betis maintained their 100 per cent record as Isco’s second-half penalty gave them a 1-0 win over Feyenoord. They are one of just five teams to have taken maximum points from three games.
At the other end of the league phase table, Lille remain without a point following a 4-2 home defeat to Galatasaray.
Yunus Akgun opened the scoring for Gala before a first-half brace from Soriba Diaoune put Lille in front.
However, Alexey Batrakov levelled before half-time and Gala retook the lead early in the second half, Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer credited with an own goal after he failed to keep out a corner flicked on by Lucas Torreira.
A deflected Victor Osimhen strike sealed the points for Gala, the Nigerian refusing to celebrate as he came back to haunt the club where he made his name.
Lille’s neighbours Lens also tasted defeat as Club Brugge made it two wins from three to start their campaign with a 3-0 victory at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
