John was one of country music’s greatest legends, and his passing left the industry in mourning.
John Anderson, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024, was present at the Country Music Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony in Nashville to induct new members Tim McGraw, Paul Overstreet, and the Stanley Brothers, just three days prior to his death. No cause of Anderson’s death has been released as of now. However, amid his passing, let’s have a look inside his health battles over the years, which involved heart troubles, hearing loss, and more.
John Anderson passed away at 71; inside his health battles
John Anderson had several health battles over the last few years. If the reports are to be believed, it was in 2003, when the country legend was sent to the hospital straight from a stage in West Virginia. During that time, he was struggling with chest pain, and doctors had to perform an angioplasty and place a stent in his heart.
According to Parade, the festival’s director revealed back then that even though John was not doing well with his health, his mind was on the stage, and he tried to leave the hospital twice because he had never missed any show.

After 14 years, John was pulled out of a festival in Albertville, Alabama, and his reps revealed that it was due to a ‘serious and unforeseen illness’. The country music legend also spoke about his brain tumor and revealed to Taste of Country that most of 2017 and 2018 had been spent with him in the grip of severe illness, and he also revealed that doctors feared brain cancer. Speaking to BGS, John mentioned that he died a couple of times.
At one point, John Anderson lost more than 90 percent of his hearing. For someone like him, whose music made him stand out in the crowd, it was one of the toughest things to deal with. Reportedly, in the following years, some of his hearing returned after surgeries, following which he started to play and record music again.
John Anderson recalled escaping death thrice
John Anderson was drawn to rock and roll early in his career; however, he fell for country music after listening to the vocal performances of George Jones and Merle Haggard, who later became his friends. In the ’70s, he started releasing country singles and instantly grabbed attention.
It was in 1980 that the legend released his self-titled debut album, and since then he had no looking back. While he wrote songs, from day one, he was a great vocalist. In his personal life, John married Jamie Anderson. The duo tied the knot in 1983 and had been together for 43 years. The duo shares two daughters.
Speaking about his health battles, John Anderson, in a 2022 interview on CBS Mornings, said that at Mayo Clinic, doctors even came and told his wife, Jamie that he ‘flatlined’. Speaking more about his health issues, the vocalist admitted that he was ‘lucky’ as he continued beating the odds and stood stronger each time. He was also asked about losing his hearing abilities. Speaking about the same, the country music legend said:
“At that time, when I lost it, I could hear things in my head. Noises. Yeah. Some horrendous noises. I was weak and had lost probably 70 pounds, and I hadn’t gained much of it back when I met Dan and Dave, yeah, and we just started with a writing session, and I was thinking boy, I really need to try, because some of the hearing had come back at that point, yeah, and I told them, ‘boys, I think I can hear well enough to sit and write.'”
